Balancing our maniacal passion for exceptional design, with our compulsive focus on our clients’ success, is a challenge.
It’s also what makes us different.

What we do

We help businesses and organizations thrive through inspired design. We create brand identities, websites, and packaging solutions that illuminate the unique spirit and value of your brand, and propel your business forward.

How we work

We work with you, in a true creative partnership. Honest, open communication is essential. We need your expertise, your input and your candid feedback.

We don’t guess. Through careful listening, vigorous discussion and laughter, we learn how you think and what you value. We study your business context as well as the needs and motivations of your customers.

We translate those insights into tangible design solutions that embody the unique spirit and value of your brand. When we present the work, you’ll feel understood. We’re obsessive about exceeding your expectations with work that is either stunning, or phenomenal.

Who we are

We’re a tight-knit team of smart, capable designers, strategists and project managers led by acclaimed graphic designer Sean Carter and account services veteran Ross Hales. Obsessively curious and creatively dexterous, we respond to design challenges with bold thinking and innovative solutions. We’re prolific and relentless about pushing ourselves to deliver exceptional work on every project. We value collaboration and self-awareness, in an atmosphere of high confidence and low ego.

What we believe

Great design elevates brands. Poor design degrades them. Why not design as if everything depended on it? Why not design for greatness?

The purpose of our work is to drive results. We understand that you’re investing in exceptional design in order to achieve specific goals. We succeed only when you succeed.

Our culture is intensely collaborative. The way we think, work and interact is open source.

What our clients will tell you

"In addition to producing a fantastic graphic and web design, the Carter Hales team went above and beyond expectations when it came to project management, communication and responsiveness. Carter Hales delivered exactly what they promised–and more–while adhering to a tight timeline and budget. We felt that we were not just a ‘client’ during this project, but a partner. Carter Hales was just as invested and pleased with the outcome of this project as we were, and the results truly speak for themselves."

"BC Place has been working with Carter Hales Design Lab since 2013. We have worked on many projects together, with our recent focus being on branding our concession program, including the Thirsty Pigeon. I am continually impressed with the high standards of their strategic thinking and design solutions, as well as their focus on us, the client. They bring passion, excellence and expertise to their work. I can wholeheartedly recommend Carter Hales to organizations seeking outstanding design solutions."

Director of Marketing & Communications

"You guys have created something truly spectacular – iconic – a complete and genuine work of art – you are gentlemen, gurus and genius. From the logo to the chrome to the swords to the light – there is not a bottle on earth that can hold a flame. Bathe in the wonder of your creation, bask in its glory for you have made the world more beautiful.

I hope the fucking saké doesn't taste like piss."

Four Fox Saké | Distinguished Den Distribution Limited

"Working with Ross, Sean, Stuart and the entire Carter Hales team was an absolute pleasure from our standpoint. Their willingness to collaborate and execute on our editorial vision was critical; while their client service was always timely, responsive and helpful. Most importantly, their creativity and innovation in developing and implementing a new look and feel for Ideas@Beedie was extraordinary. They have truly helped take our e-publication to the next level, giving us a design for both digital and offline environments that reflects the excellence of our academic research environment at SFU Beedie."

It is clear that Carter Hales takes the time to thoroughly analyze our requirements and then comes back to us with considered design solutions. They possess a rare attention to detail and are, as I expected when we first met, really enjoyable to work with. If you are seeking high quality design work, along with a seamless and organized process, I can happily recommend Carter Hales Design Lab."

Sherry Jang

Sherry Jang

senior designer

Past clients include Boston Pizza, Vancouver International Airport and Richmond Centre, while major retailers, including Crate & Barrel, Simons, Stokes Inc. and Stonewall Kitchen, have sold her illustrations. When Sherry is not playing with typefaces and Pantone colours, she’s daydreaming about interior design and what walls to remove in her home.

Rosie Gopaul

Rosie Gopaul

Rosie is a strong believer of designing in consideration of aesthetics, concept and purpose. Over time she’s collected a variety of creative prints, wine bottles and packaging. Rosie graduated Best of Show, on the Dean and Honours list, alongside her degree in Applied Design at the Art Institute of Vancouver.

As an advocate of hard work and passion, she completed an internship at Rethink Communications, and worked at Ballistic Arts — where she also led their company rebrand. She has worked with clients like Sprott Shaw College, Vancity, Steve Nash Fitness, and Concord Pacific.

When she’s not designing, Rosie enjoys hiking the deep forest depths of Anmore. And when you visit our office, she’ll be found dancing in her chair while working in the happiest place on earth — her quirky imagination (at least she thinks so).

Pam McNicol

Pam McNicol LLB

Finance & Administration

Pam McNicol manages the finance and administration requirements for Carter Hales, overseeing the details that Sean and Ross are hopeless at. Indeed, as a lover of puzzles and a stickler for details, Pam is naturally gifted at her work here. Pam also ensures that Sean and Ross don’t get themselves into trouble and, if they do, she can help. If you pay your bills on time you will never hear from Pam. If you don’t, she has been instructed to call you until you can’t stand it.

Miles Linklater

Miles Linklater

Senior Production Artist

Miles is the Senior Production Artist at Carter Hales, and by senior, we mean really senior. His career as a production artist began in Winnipeg in 1978. Prior to joining Carter Hales, Miles ran his own company (24pt Helvetica) offering production, layout and design. His career path was decided while studying opera privately and at the Banff Centre (and then singing with the Vancouver Opera for twenty years). He realized singing and performing would never pay the bills. Expo ’86 brought him to the Lower Mainland where he has worked in pre-press adapting his skills from Compugraphic imaging systems to present day Creative Suite. As a self-employed individual for the past twenty years, Miles has enjoyed working as a production artist, designer, editor, and art director for Vancouver- and Europe-based ad agencies and opera companies. He’s proud to be doing volunteer web and design/production work for the Vancouver Humane Society and the Opera program at the University of British Columbia. Miles still finds time to enjoy his passion for opera and regularly travels to attend performances in Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

Alan provides a strong understanding of design which enables easy and efficient communication amongst his peers. With countless of hours spent on video games, Alan has been meticulously obsessed with the interactive details that enhances the experience for the user. He strives to apply a similar experience for users on the web, believing that websites should be easy and enjoyable to use.

Is it sheer coincidence that she shares the same last name as Stuart? We are still trying to figure this out.

Joanne Henderson

Joanne Henderson

Studio Manager

Joanne is a graduate of BCIT’s Marketing program. Upon graduation, she realized that her love of making lists, checking things off and seeing projects through from beginning to end, made her the perfect candidate for production. Driven by a commitment to process, Joanne possesses an inordinate capacity for organization and management. Having spent her career in the creative realm, working for Benwell-Atkins Printers, Unisource, Wasserman & Partners Advertising, Hangar 18 Creative and Edelman Public Relations, Joanne is at home with long-time colleagues at Carter Hales. From months-long annual report projects to one-day turnarounds for social media posts, Joanne has seen it all, working for YVR, CP Rail, Boston Pizza, HP, and Teck, among many others. During the winter, Joanne can be found snowshoeing the North Shore mountains and, in the summer, golfing (well).

Awards matter. If we didn't win awards then our mothers would have absolutely nothing to brag about.

We've been honoured to win over 180 design awards thus far. By our math that equals about 11,472 Mom brags.
